Spousal Interview - Outland - is it a normal process to interview your spouse?

hello all. I am a Canadian Citizen sponsored my husband who lives in Bangladesh. I am originally from Bangladesh as well.We got married Feb 3, 2017 and sent in our application August 14th, 2017. It was an arranged marriage as per our tradition and culture and now we are very much in love and miss each other dearly. I visited him last October and patiently waiting through this long and painful process. He had his medical Jan, 2018 and have heard no news since then. We requested CIC to update us and they are saying our application is sitting in an interview queue. They have not mentioned any timeline or why he needs to be interviewed. Our marriage is genuine, we had hundreds of people all are friends and family attend our wedding and he is a very qualified person to live in any country. We have provided all the information they asked for. I am curious why the interview and also what is the wait time now? is this a normal process to interview everyone now a days or should I be getting a lawyer to ask these questions? I would have to move back to Bangladesh if he does not get his immigration since we want to start a family soon. I have invested 15 years of my life studying and working in this country but end of the day we cannot live without each other. We would very much like to know the decision and get it over with. Please help shed some light on this for us and pray for us. thank you Kindly.

The interview is likely because they have some concerns about whether the marriage is genuine or not. Do you guys have major red flags like large age, educational, or cultural difference? He has relatives or family back in Canada? He has attempted to come to Canada in the past? Did you guys perform everything that is expected in a Bangladeshi wedding? How long did you stay with him after marriage? Are one of you previously married or have kids?

thank you for a quick reply. We are about the same age. he is two years younger than me. Almost similar background, it was arranged, so parents make sure you are 70% match before they introduce their kids, very much a norm in Bangladesh. However we knew each other only for a couple of months before deciding. My father had introduced me to two other guys but my husband and I clicked pretty much right away due to our similar interests and life goals and we chatted for a month and gone out twice for dates. but dating is not normal in Bangladesh and thats where the idea of arrange marriage comes in. I am ready to have family and settle down so did not see any point to delay the wedding. I was on a vacation from work at that time and I stayed a month with him after the wedding because my work gave me another month to stay back. I went to see him again in October last year and asking for time off again to go visit him in December of this year if he is not here by then.

of course, we want to be together regardless. pray for us. it would mean a great sacrifice for me to leave my job, my lifestyle here...as you can imagine I have lived here for 15 years and in my 30's..very much feel the cultural difference when I go back now. But we want to live together asap so I will move back if he gets refused. thank you for the advice. we are getting ready with all the evidence.

one more thing, do you know the time frame of this process by any chance? how long should I expect to wait to hear about the interview? and how long does it take after to approve or reject?

It is not good or bad to have an arranged marriage. However, arranged marriages are not part of the western cultural norm; therefore, there's an expectation that the circumstances surrounding the marriage, and whether the relationship is genuine, will be scrutinized at a more thorough level.

I was in queue for an interview in the summer of 2017
And got it in Oct 2017
My husband and I married within 3 mths
of knowing each other and my family
couldn’t be present at our wedding
So that was our red flags.

So they asked the typical question to why my family wasnt there
How we met
When did we fight last and what it was about
Which movies we like
What would we do if we go refused
Why i didnt move to his country instead

Although your parents may have asked for your feedback on potential matches that is unfortunately not the case in many marriages. Canada wants to try to refuse any marriages they feel are pure financial arrangements and that the man or woman is in the marriage willingly.
