Good morning, I have a question in regards to sponsoring your spouse. My fiancé and I have been together for 3 years and we recently got engaged, however I’m on a study permit and have 2 years left in my program. I would like for him to be able to come to Canada until my studies have been completed.

Is their a requirement of you having being married for a certain period of time before applying?

Am I able to apply now for spousal sponsorship even though we are just engaged?

What is the proper procedure? I would like for us to do this the right way to avoid any complications.

Any information provided is appreciated!!!

If you're in Canada on a study permit, you can't apply to sponsor your fiance. This program is only eligible for Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada to sponsor their foreign spouses.

Not according to the Canadian official Website, it says that I can sponsor a common law partner, spouse or dependant during my studies.

You can't sponsor him for PR.. are you talking about bringing him here on a work permit? From the official IRCC website:

Who can use this application package?
Use this application package if you’re a Canadian citizen, Registered Indian or a permanent resident of Canada who is 18 years of age or older and you want to sponsor:

  • your spouse or common-law partner who lives with you in Canada, and their dependent children
  • your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner who lives overseas, and their dependent children
  • your dependent children

You cannot bring your fiance to Canada. You must be either married or common law. Common law means you have lived together continuously for at least one full year.

I do not want to sponsor him for a pr just for an open work permit until I am done with my studies.

Again, not possible. You must be either married or common law.

You can apply immediately. Note that refusal rates seem to be around 50% (approval is not guaranteed).

If you have further questions - post them to the International Students section of the forum. Recommend you also dedicate time to researching past posts in that section of the forum to understand why people are refused and how you can put together a strong OWP application.

You're in the permanent residency section of the forum, you should either post this thread on the international students section or specify what you're looking to do. As far as I know there is no length requirement for the marriage.
