I am looking to apply for my citizenship in the near future and have questions about my name. My name on my passport is:

Surname:
Given name: ABC XYZ

Now when I first came to Canada, I was able to get my name on the Health card and Driving license:

Surname: XYZ
Given name: ABC

As a result, my driver's license has the correct name. When I got my PR, my name came as follows:

Surname: ABC XYZ
Given name:

Now applying for citizenship, I want my name to have the surname and the first name as it in Driving License and Health card. CoPR cannot be changed and since I am getting ready to apply for citizenship, do not want to go with PR card name change. Since, it is a name split only and not an actual name change, do you think it would work without proof of name change on citizenship application?

If not, my passport is up for renewal but since I am applying for citizenship do not want to get that renewed as well. Point being I can get my name split on the passport if I go and get a new one. Would that alone work or I would have to get the name change done in the province (which is effectively a name split)?

As anyone been in this situation before?

Thanks.

My logic tells me that if you have not changed your name(yet) just use the name as you have on your PR and drivers license. once you get the citizenship apply for the change just so you won't complicate things for yourself. just my 2 cents :)

but his name is not the same on any 2 document! PR card has Last Name = ABC XYZ, his Passport has Given Name = ABC XYZ and his ID Proof has First Name = ABC and Last Name = XYZ.
I don't know if I have an answer :) but the form asks you to give your info as it was in the last immigration document you received from IRCC/CIC. So I would suggest stick to that to avoid complicating your application. I remember reading on this forum that name split is also a name change and people recommended against it.

Best way will be to go for legal name change. You will get your legal name change certificate in a month or two. Then you will be able to attach a copy of the certificate with your citizenship application.

You will not need to get your license and health card updated.
Updating PR card will be an option but not necessary.

I can share my own Experience with you .
Just use same name as it is in your PR , else I am sure , you will be in trouble because of name mismatch

rest is upto you

Good Luck

Had a similar problem to you. I decided to apply with the name as on PR so that the citizenship process would not get stuck and become non routine.
Once you get citizenship, you can then get your name issues resolved at your convenience. Have now sorted out the name bit as well.
Or as keypad suggests, get the name change done first and then apply for citizenship with the corrected name.

Hi,
I had the same problem. My passport had only given name, because of which my COPR and PR card had captured everything under last name.

I have got everything rectified now, without getting any affidavit or legal name change procedure or name change request through any provincial offices.

1 - Submit a letter to BLS (along with passport application form to get a new passport with first name and last name) explaining the error and why you could not get it rectified earlier. (In my case the PR application was under process). - Got my new passport in 20 days

2 - Once you receive the updated passport - Submit similar letter to CIC explaining the error, along with other documents - Application form (Do not tick legal name change as you are not legally changing your name) + Cancelled page of old passport showing the new passport number and copy of the new passport showing old passport number, ensure you mention this also in the letter) + copy of the letter you submitted to BLS + any other documents. - Got my New PR card in 72 Days, Please note COPR will not change, only PR card will issued with a new name.

3 - Got my SIN, Driver Licence and Health Card updated.

Its an easy process if your letter is crisp and explains things clearly. Let me know if you have any doubts.

Hi Manu,
I too have the very same issue and was tentative to correct things but your advise seems very encouraging. Nevertheless I have 3 questions before I start with the process - Appreciate if you could please confirm on below 2 things.

1. Did the Indian Consulate return your old passport? Obviously as my PR entry visa is on my Old passport, I would like to have it handy when I apply for PR visa / card name updation

2. Did you by any chance, enquire or have any information regarding tatkal services in name splitting as i am in a hurry. 20 days is not bad but is there any faster service?

3. What if I only split my name in the Passport and not update it in my PR card - as it is almost time for renewal in a year? Will that be an issue while travel to India and return to Canada...... as PR Card would still literally be AS IS despite the name change -

Example:
Currently:
Assume my Actual FN - XXX and my Actual LN - YYY. Now on Passport, my Given name is: XXX YYY and Surname is Blank => Name on my PR card is XXX YYY

After:
Given name: XXX and Surname: YYY

Hi!

See my comments below in blue

- Yes, they return it with a cancelled stamp. It also has the new passport number. You will have to provide a copy of these pages when you submit PR card application.

2. Did you by any chance, enquire or have any information regarding tatkal services in name splitting as i am in a hurry. 20 days is not bad but is there any faster service?

- I Did, but they did not have tatkal service when I applied. Not sure now.

- I wouldn't do that.. that is like having 2 different names on 2 different travel documents.. although the name is same but one can still have some problem. I would change on both.

Thanks so much Manu!

AM sorry would need a little more inforamtion - though would check with BLS but as I was afraid - they hardly pick the call.

My question:
My address on Passport was Indian address and now that I in Canada, I am presuming I should be changing my address on my passport to the current address and so... along with name split request, it would be Change in Address as well.

So did you apply for "Reissue of passport and mention - name split and address change"?

And what are the documents required in such a cases?

Actually in my case at the time of landing officer did manual corrections on COPR (and on system probably too) , and my PR was issued with right first name and last name. But my DL and health card has name XX XX YYY(as its issued before PR as i was on WP) .... now my question is when i have to submit two identification documents then whether names in all those should match or PR Cad with XX YYY and DL ,Health Card with XX XX YYY will work??

Hi,
You have an option to select what address you want on the passport. You ll have to submit a proof for the same. Just apply for a Re-issue of passport.. Fill the desired name on the online form. Along with the application form that you fill online, draft a letter explaining the problem.
