Does MBA(PGDBM) from AICTE approved private college (no Uni affiliation) count?

Hi Guys,

I have tried to search around but I am not sure if my MBA counts towards the CRS score (under level of education), but I was wondering if anyone knows this on this forum.

I have an Indian MBA from an AICTE approved private college (MERI, Delhi) that is not affiliated (for the MBA program) with any university. I also have a Bacehlors degree that I know will count, but having the additional degree will improve my score a lot.

Simply getting the transcript from MERI will cost a lot, and I dont want to pay for something that does not count. I was wondering if you guys on the forum know if AICTE approved MBA will count towards my final score.

Yes, you are right, having an additional degree will definitely improve your score. Did you check your degree equivalency on WES site? I would suggest you to check it here to get some idea before you initiate the process http://www.wes.org/ca/evaluations/preliminary.asp.

There are two ways at looking at the issue you have at hand - Cost and Benefit.

1. Cost of getting your transcripts and certificate attested by your college and getting it sent to WES directly. I am not sure how much the college would charge you for attesting the documents and sending to WES. You can avoid this cost by asking your college to send the documents to you in a sealed envelope placed in another envelope, this way, you avoid paying the college the cost of sending the documents directly. Instead, you can get your Bachelors sealed envelope and Masters sealed envelope together in another envelope and send it in one shot to WES for evaluation.

2. Benefit I do not have much information about MERI to comment on it, but lets assume the worst case scenario, even if WES may not accept it equivalent to Masters in Canada, it may possibly still evaluate it as a post secondary credential which is still better than just getting your Bachelors assessed. You can check this out for yourself here https://www.canadavisa.com/comprehensive-ranking-score-calculator.html. If we consider the case where your MBA is evaluated as a post secondary credential then you can select 'two or more post secondary credentials with atleast one being 3+ years'. This was you get a better score than just evaluating your Bachelors.

Try different combinations in the calculator and see, how much difference does it makes to your score and then you can take a call, whether the cost is justified. For example with only bachelors you get score 400+ and Masters does not make much difference to your score, then it is not worth the cost that you incur, since you will anyway get an invite from OINP with 400+.

If your focus is on improving your scores considerably, then I would say IELTS is the trump card. Check it out for yourself in the above calculator.

All the best!

Thanks for your detailed answer. Based on the calculator I am getting 420+for one degree and 450+for two bachelors. If the crs score comes down enough I will probably qualify for express entry with two degrees but not with one. I already have full score from ielts. Now I don't know about OINP, so that is something I need to look at, but are you implying that a score of 400+is good enough for Ontario Provincial nomination?

Yes since your CRS score is 400+ (based on the calculator), you are eligible to receive PT Notification of Interest from OINP. As per the trend that we have seen, you should get an invite within a week or two. In case you don't, I would suggest you to create a new EE profile. This worked for many applicants, they got Ontario PT Notification of Interest for Nomination within a week of creating a new EE profile. In fact, OINP also suggests candidates to do so as per their update dated November 24, 2015 (given below).

"It has come to our attention that technical issues may have resulted in candidates not receiving Notification of Interest (NOI) though they believe they meet the criteria for Ontario’s Express Entry streams. If you believe you fall into this category and have not received an NOI within one month of submitting your EE profile, we encourage you to create a new profile in the EE system. If you create a new EE profile, you must delete your old profile."

You can find the full update here. http://www.ontarioimmigration.ca/en/pnp/OI_PNPNEW.html

To know more about OINP check this link http://www.ontarioimmigration.ca/en/pnp/OI_PNP_EE_CAPITAL.html.

AICTE approved two year pgdm counts as master degree. I have pgdm from mdi, gurgaon which is AICTE approved but not affiliated to a university. WES certified it as Master Degree.

Thanks guys, you have been awesome help. I have really learned a lot here. I don't know if I have thanked you enough. I have one final question, but this is not related to my profile but my sister's, she has a BSc a BEd and an MBA, they all seem to be unrelated degrees. I think in the point system it does not matter at all, but does it matter in some other way. She has IT work experience of more than 4 years based on her MBA, does not having an IT degree matter in anyway?

1. Not having an IT degree will not matter.
2. Yes, the type of education does not matter in the point system, what matters is the level of education (Masters, Bachelors, Diploma etc) and its Canadian equivalency certified by WES.

So based on your feedback, I started entering my degrees in WES website, but I have a confusion regarding sections "Name of Diploma/Certificate" and "Institution Type".

For "Name of Diploma/Certificate" did you choose Postgraduate Diploma in Management or Postgraduate Diploma (AICTE)
For "Institution Type" did you choose University Education or Professional Education

I find "Institute type" to be really confusing. For University Education WES website states "WES does not accept mark sheets that have been issued and/or attested by the college you attended unless from an autonomous or constituent college.". Then they provide a UGC link that lists Autonomous colleges, but MDI Gurgaon or MERI Delhi are not listed there.

Hi rajibsam, I am updating my profile to include my MBA and based on your feedback I picked Professional Education. The BIG problem here though is that they are looking or Certificate of Membership. How did you address this? I've copied the exact text from the required document list on the WES website.

All documents listed below are required.

Professional Education: : Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Cost and Work Accountants, Institution of Engineers, Institute of Company Secretaries

1. Certificate of Membership

An official document issued by the appropriate professional body certifying that the holder has been admitted as a qualified member.

Hi

Can you please let me know, from where did you get your Transcripts? Did MDI helped you or will AICTE provide the Transcripts, as in this case as the college is affiliated to AICTE,
