Dear All,

Hope all things are fine . Just want to know about Traveller cheque . Can I bring TC and all banks accept TC or not . I know some people are carrying Traveller card as well but for that each transaction we have to pay extra charges and there is limit to withdraw as well . If anyone have idea let me know .

Why travellers cheques? Why not a direct wire transfer? A lot less expensive. It is possible to open a bank account in Canada before you arrive. Or perhaps make arrangements with your foreign bank about transferring all your money after you have left. (I did the latter). Worked fine. Carried some cash, but wired the bulk.

Was in Europe when I cam to Canada. Opened an account with RBC, wired the money between my european bank and RBC. It does not matter which bank you open your initial account with. You can easily change bank accounts after you arrive. Seems to me the point is to get your money to Canada. Once it is here, not a problem to move things around. Best to speak to you own bank and find out about international wires and their processes. You need an account to send the money to, but your bank will tell you how to make that happen.

Good luck

I did not land in Halifax (I landed in Vancouver, and it has been a while since I landed, though for the most part the landing related questions appear to be general and applicable to Canada, not just Halifax. Having lived in Halifax now for 8 years I can hopefully offer some insights. So..

4. Spices. Good spices are hard to find in Canada and especially Halifax. If you want good spices you have to have a friend send it to you.

5. If you are coming from a place that is not generally cold I would suggest that you save your money and buy winter clothes in Halifax. For the most part even in winter regular clothes will prove adequate. Mostly you need a good winter coat (rated for cold temperatures). Good pair of snow boots. Cleats for ice. Some warm socks would be nice. If you are working outdoors in winter, you may need some work specific clothing, like insulated coveralls. In either case I would suggest that you come here and buy your actual winter clothes here. For your info, coldest I have experienced since moving to Halifax was -22 degrees C. Mostly winter temperatures hover around -5 degrees C.

6. SIN. Don't remember having to do much when I landed. My SIN letters just arrived, as part of the regular process. (might be different now)
BANK : There are 5 big banks in Canada. They have started competing more and more with each other for foreigner accounts. They are RBC, BMO, TD, Scotia and CIBC. Best to is to shop around when you arrive to find the package that works the best for your needs. Fair warning. Banking in Canada sucks and is generally rather painful and complicated.
SIM : Most of the major networks do not use SIM cards (as you would know them) any more. Same as banks, a few networks. Mostly expensive but fairly good. Options are Bell, Telus, Rogers, and budget Kudoo + plus a few smaller local operators. I am with Bell. Best coverage and service. Might also be worth looking and bundling services. Can often bundle cell, cable and telephone into one package with some savings. Hunt when you arrive.
Real Estate agents : Most are pretty good so no real need to fuss to much about it. In Canada most property transactions have two agents. One for the buyer and one for the seller. If you are able to reach the listing agent, might be possible negotiate a slight discount on commission. Realty is very strongly regulated so you can feel safe to deal with any licensed realtor.

7. I don't know that there are actually specific foreigner communities in Halifax. It is a pretty small city. Someone else might have a different perspective.

8. Job market is not great for the most part. Sales positions are fairly common, call center and banking positions fairly common. Loads of online resources and I would suggest that you search for employers and contact their HR departments directly (often through the employer websites directly). There are one of tow agencies that help with executive positions though those positions are few and far between.. If you have status I would suggest that you start looking for a job as soon as you can. Don't wait until you arrive..

Feel free to reach out if you have any other Halifax specific questions.
Thanks for all the info.

Hello Everyone,
I have one query regarding landing in Halifax.
Can I choose halifax as my first destination in canada? In that case My first time immigration procedure will be done in Halifax international airport.. right? But if I choose any route via Toronto or Montreal in that case my immigration procedure will be completed in Toronto or Montreal airport.
Which one is better? Can anyone who already landed in Halifax suggest?

I am planning to start my journey in Halifax in First week of April 2018.

Best Regards,
Shakhawet

Hi Guys,

After Going through all the posts in this thread. I can see that we all have many questions and very few answers. NetMecca, has really been helpful in this discussion. But let's try to find more answers and try to share in this thread.

I am also planning to immigrate to Halifax soon. I will be sharing my experience in this thread and also will try to create a one-stop information thread for the Nova Scotia PNP or Halifax, Nova Scotia in general. I hope other members of the platform will also do the same. So we all can help each other in this journey.

Thanks,
Dhruv Jani.

I am landing in Halifax on 17 April via Toronto, since we have to do the landing at first port of entry, I hope I don't miss my connection to Halifax. I am really really positive about Halifax and will certainly share my experience as well once landed. I have already booked an airbnb near Clayton Park for the first week. Thanks to everyone who is contributing to the conversations.

Has anyone here registered with ISANS.ca? any possible reviews?

Hi,

It's awesome, I am also planning to do the same. Just that I will be stopping in Toronto for few days. N for Halifax I am also planning to book an Airbnb for few weeks. Seems like the right thing to do.

My concern is the address we have to provide to immigration officer for our PR card at the airport. Some people have suggested you can share the address details later on. Let me know if you have any idea about the same.

N thanks for your information, let's stay in touch as I will also be Landing in Halifax around 20-25 April. N we all can help out each other and make this journey successful.

You have 4 options:

a) Provide address to CBSA agent at the time of landing and he/she will update this in their system. It could be an UPS address.

After landing once you have an address with you:
b) Call CIC Customer Care and update address.

c) Get 5456B form ( Address Notification - Permanent Resident Card) from CBSA agent at the time of landing and fax it to CIC later. You won't get this form online.

d) Go to online address notification for PR cards weblink and update address. Several people have complained that this link is not working.

1. Halifax is a small city with fairly decent public transport if you need that, so finding a place to rent is really easy. Rent varies from around $650 (for a small apartment) to several thousands if you like. For about $850-$900/ month you can get a fairly decent sized apartment in a reasonably nice neighbourhood.

2. Do not know unfortunately. Have no kids

3. There are a fair number of call center jobs available in the banking sector and for most it might be possible to start within 2-3 weeks. The pays is around $35 - $45k starting. (deduct about 35-40% for taxes and benefits). For more senior positions, not unlike for most other jobs in Halifax, finding one is hard and will take several months. Best to plan to start at the bottom and work your way into a senior position, especially if you need to find a job quickly. If you are concerned, if you already have status (PR or work permit) start looking before you arrive. I know CIBC is always looking for people for their call center.

4. see 3

5. You might have some trouble with this. Expect you will have to adapt your diet a little. It is possible, to get a decent diet, but decent spices in particular are really hard to find if at all. You may have to import / bring your own.

Good luck

Thank you NetMecca for the information shared.
I just had one question for you, regarding the wire transfer fees. Were you supposed to pay fees only to the origin bank (Europe) or even to the destination bank (CA)?
Thank you in advance.
