Document Translation cost

Hi. For those who have translated documents, how much did you pay?

I am currently in Canada, and if I apply next year I would need to translate the ff:

-my police clearance
-my divorce certificate
-my partner's live birth certificate

So, 3 documents in total. I just wanna know how much it would cost me?
Will it cost me more if I have them translated in my country or here in Canada?

How much did you pay here in Canada or in your country?

Also, I have 4 months to go to qualify to apply for permanent residence. Should I start collecting documents now or later?
I'm not sure if 4 months is too early. I know documents have validities/expiry to consider.

Sorry I cant answer any of your questions, but I imagine others will have difficulty answering where it is cheaper unless you provide your home country and/or language that is being translated.

I got my birth certificate translated in canada by a province certified translator (I got his contact from the embassy) and I paid 50 CAD. I got another document translated in my home country (a developing country where everything is cheaper) and it was a tad bit cheaper but not much.

I read from someone else's post that you might need an affidavit but I wasn't advised about that so I can't comment on whether it is required or not, or the cost involved in that.

I would wait to do your medical closer to the date of submission since it doesn't take very long and the doctors office send the result in directly for you. Make an appointment early though. Police clearance on the other hand, maybe start like a month in advance.

I had 3 documents translated from Spanish to English done here in Canada and they were $100 each + tax. Birth cert, police clearance and marriage cert.

I had a document translated (2 page baptismal record) from Korean to English by a translator in Canada. It was around $90.

Does the city you live in have a Multicultural Association? It's an organization funded by CIC for helping new immigrants settle. They also provide translation services and the prices were pretty reasonable. I think I paid 25$ per page (from Russian to English) plus 10$ for the affidavit.

Thanks for all the replies. Now I have an idea how much I would have to shell out for these translations. I was just shocked at the prices I found when I googled about this. I will try to find the cheapest ones of course.

To someone that mentioned affidavit, I hope you meant the statutory declarations (which I do need), but not an affidavit attached on the translations??

I am thinking of starting to get these major documents 3 months in advance. I already had my medical when I applied for my first extension. I heard its valid for a year.

I'm a translator myself and my advice is shop around. Unfortunately I can't translate my own documents, but I needed a certified translation of my birth certificate and a police certificate and was shocked at the abusive prices set by some translators. I was quoted anything between $90 and $130. $130 for 6 lines of text? Give me a break. These aren't literary translations, people, all you need to do is use a set format and amend a few details. In the end I contacted a translator who is based in Vancouver (and not in the city that's closest to where I live) and he quoted me a flat fee of $30 per document, certification included, and since he's registered with the provincial translators' association, he didn't even need to provide an affidavit.

Like I said, shop around, and contact translators in big cities where there's more demand and more competition.

As for the affidavit there are different types. My wife and I required affidavits from our embassies showing that we could legally marry. We married in Thailand. In doing so all our marriage documents required translation into to Thai. Then once marriage was legal in Thailand we needed to then translate the registration and marriage cert back into English.



Helpful word of warning to those having your marriage documents translated into Thai. Make sure you use the translator service located right at the DFA offices, If you use an approved translator from outside there is a 99.9% chance it will have an error and it will not be approved when at the DFA. We had an error on our translation and so had to be redone again, by the DFA translator in the office. We were not the only couple either with that problem and the error seems to be caused by the same approved outside translation company and its the same exact error on all of them. Can you say "kick back" being paid to first original translator ? lol

As for the medical yes get it done as close as you can to the date you submit the application.
For the police cert it depends on the country your trying to get it issued from. Some countries are a couple of weeks to a month and others take a few months.

My wife is from Venezuela, we're trying to get her documents: birth certificate and police record check all translated from spanish to english and marriage certificate. As long as all three copies are original copies and she physically hands them over to me in person. Do you know if I can take them back to Ottawa and just get someone in Ottawa to translated and certified it for me? Do you know if CIC requires me to notarised it for spousal sponsorship? hard to get these things done in Venezuela now cause the complications. So I thought it be easier since i'm going to see and meet her in Peru.

They didn't need your official copy? i mean my wife can basically just take pictures of the criminal record check and birth certificate to me and I can forward it to a certified translator? I'm not really concern of the price. I'm just more concern what is the right way and can I translate the documents in Canada instead of Venezuela. Caracas too dangerous to be running around that city doing these documents. So if I can translate it in Canada, that'll be great. Any suggestions?
