Guys, what is your advice? should I try to find a job in my field, wherever I find it and then rent a place near by? Or should I rent a place somewhere, find a survival job till I find one in my field?
I am not wealthy, and I will just have the required 12 000 dollars, I am young and single.
I know there is no right anwer to that question, but I need some piece of advice, and your thoughts on that matter.

depends which city you live in. Toronto commutes are wild. Halifax not so much. Also cost will dictate. Chances are depending on the city you live in your ability to pay rent will dictate where you live, and you will just have to suffer the commute. If you do not worry about your first home being your final I would suggest get a place you can afford, since you need a place to live whether you have a job or not, and find a job as soon as you can.

12k will only last you for a few months so spend it wisely, if your target city is Toronto - and as you say you're single - i would advise you to start with renting a room only (should be in the range of $500 - $650 per month, unfurnished/or semi-furnished) - preferably near the subway line so you'd be able to move around the city easily. Once you secure a decent job, you can slowly plan your next move and gradually upgrade your lifestyle.

If i were you my focus would be in finding a job in my field (because that's the only way to live a decent life in this country)..survival jobs might keep you alive, but you'll be miserable and will always be on a tight budget. If you have to do survival jobs, try to do part-time - say - on weekends and evenings and leave the mornings and afternoons for the professional job search, attending bridging programs, meeting recruiters, attending face 2 face interviews/responding to phone interviews...etc. The only problem with getting a full time survival job, is you could get stuck there and won't have any time or energy to look for anything better.

Perhaps you should share which city you plan on settling in, on landing.
My advice? Book a cheap place on airbnb for say a month or two. Be ready to inform the host that you'd like to extend your stay for another month before the current period ends, depending on how the job search is going. Question: what is your area of work?

I plan to live and work in Toronto, but I will go where the job will be. So I think I will follow emamabd 's advice, and look for a room downtown, or anyway near a subway or train station. I know it won't be the cheapest, but I don't have a car and don't drive anyway.

Hi next2015,

I am going to Halifax.
Is it safe to find a temporary stay on Airbnb ? Can I get a place for a month or two on Airbnb?

Hi next2015,

Finding a place to live in Halifax is very easy. We have a total overstock of rental apartments starting from as low as $650/month. For $950 you could probably get a two bed apartment in a decent area and building with good public transport (by most standards). There is also not much of a waiting time. I'll bet you could find, rent and take occupation of an apartment in 48 hours if you are motivated. Halifax is pretty small so commutes are not that bad no matter where you live. (be mindful of where the busses run). On the outskirts and in some suburbs you might have trouble with busses if you need that.

Stay in a hotel or motel for a night or two. If you want you can probably get a weekly rate at a motel. Rent a car, find an apartment, move in and thats that.

Good luck

Its safer to find temporary accommodation when landing as it offers flexibility should you have to move coz you found work in another city or some other reason. Personally, I always recommend airbnb because its cheap and with it comes everything you need with food as the only bill, which you can cook your self to lower your costs even more, if the airbnb has a kitchen. Take note of netmecca's post, some info that my be useful to you.

Thanks for your replies, NetMecca and Next2015.
One last question, I heard that there are some grey areas(Not safe Areas) in Halifax which are not suitable for renting an apartment. Is it right ? or just a rumour?
If this is right then could you please tell me that which areas are suitable for renting apartment and looking for jobs as well.

Many thanks to both of you.

I've not been to Halifax so I'd rather not throw out any names. I can give you 2 pieces of advice though: (1) find threads on the forum about halifax - I've seen some and recent ones, and ask the question there (2) if you choose to do airbnb, make time to have a conversation with your host, they'll share with you all the info you need about the city.

Sorry, but thats the best I can offer for this question.

Good advice.

It is all relative unfortunately, so hard to say. Not many places around Halifax that I would consider undesirable. I would suggest that you take a gander through any neighbourhood before renting there. It is fairly easy to get a sense of the neighbourhood and whether it would be good fit for you or not. Especially over a weekend. No different than anywhere else. No matter where you end up most neighbourhoods in Halifax are a decent enough, and you should not have much trouble enjoying a good life here.

Good luck
