Hi,

I want some information if someone has a car accident whether it's minor or major. What are the steps to be taken?

Step one
If anyone’s injured, call 911.
Move the vehicles off the road if it’s safe to do so. Avoid discussing who’s at fault for the crash.

Step two
Get details.* Record the following for all the vehicles and drivers involved in the crash:
• driver’s name, licence number, province/state and contact info
• licence plate and year, make and model of vehicle
• insurance details if the vehicle isn’t from B.C.
* You may also need to provide this information to the police.

Step three
See if there were any witnesses. Record their names and contact info.

Step four
Describe the crash scene (if possible take photos or use the diagram on
the back):
• What were the date, time and location?
• What were the weather and road conditions?
• What direction were each of you travelling?
• Where was your vehicle and what lane were you using?
• Where was the other vehicle?

The previous post is detailed, but the most important aspects are :
Call police and report 911
Be sure to stay on the scene. Leaving will get you in trouble, if the police have not give you the ok.
Call your insurance asap. They will prove you with very valuable advice on how to proceed.
If you are in a position to do so, take a few picks and get names and phone numbers of other parties and any witnesses.

I would not recommend that you involve yourself in too much investigating and proving the claim. Photos and police will usually do fine. Also better to leave that part up to the insurance. Depending on how serious the incident they will respond in a way that protects their and your interests if necessary.

Try and get a picture of him and the plates and his car. Failing that write down the plate no, make and model of the car, and get a description of the individual.Then call the police and report a hit and run driver (Hit and run is quite illegal and makes them look guilty as hell). Also call your insurance co. and report the info taken to them and try to find good car accident lawyer. When he runs it makes your story more believeable.

Don't dredge up old threads for no reason.

What do you mean by protect your rights? Have you been charged criminally? Not all car accidents involve criminal charges. Is this a DUI? Was someone hurt/killed? Was dangerous driving involved?
