Thanks again Chrbrow for replying to my query precisely. It helped me to understand better.

Well after reading the complete information you posted the immediate question i got is regarding what if the admission is denied?

i know there could be/might be quite a few reasons for denying the admission, but still again i would like to know with the kind of profile i have what could be the reasons for denying the admission.

Secondary school education - 84 %
Pre Graduate - 93 %
Bachelors in Engineering- 74 % Distinction (generally we call Masters degree as Post graduation )
(B.E) /graduate

IELTS- 6.5
not less than 6 in any of the individual sections and university requirement is 6.5

And nearly 7 years of Information Technology work experience in Networking/Operating system domain/Virtualization etc.

Please provide your thoughts/information . Thanks
Hello,
Your application seems strong, but Uvic is a top BC school. Depending on the program and pool of applicants to choose from, there might be selection criteria that are only privy to the faculty of that department. I would say that you have a good chance given that you are international and applying for Masters.

I also think you're a good candidate because you have 7 years work experience in the field. Post-graduate programs love having this type of student in their programs because you will likely promote the school by going off to another specialized position directly related to your studies at Uvic.

Keep me up to date with any communications your hear from the University. I can assist you further if needed.

Best,

chrbrow

1.Can i change from MAsc thesis to industrial program after i get admitted and received offer letter. If yes, how?

2.How much are the living expenses if we decide to live outside the campus.(including Room rent, wifi and transport)?

3.How are the local part-time job opportunities to work side by side?

Waiting for your reply.

Good Day,

It is possible to switch your program after you have been accepted, but I would advise that you wait until your study permit is granted. The key is that you maintain status as a student for your entire stay in Canada. You will be here temporarily, with permission to study (not work). Step one for you should be to get admitted to the University then apply for a study permit.

Living off campus is quite common and you can search online at www.usedvictoria.com or www.kijiji.com for some apartments or basement suites to rent. Rent varies, but expect to pay at least 800$ a month for a one bedroom apartment or basement suite. Anything with two bedrooms is usually minimum 1000$. However you can luck out and find decent places for cheaper. It all depends on how much time you spend looking for the right place. Transportation is best by bus. You can buy monthly passes for around 30$. The transit system doesn't have skytrains like Vancouver, but it has a decent bus system, which can take you where you need to go. It is well set up for bus transport at the University.

Working off campus is possible but as outlined under the Immigration Regulations, you mustn't exceed 20 hours per week, and you must maintain your status as a student throughout your stay. This basically limits you to some part time work such as restaurants, tutoring, etc. If you have a talent in a science, math etc. you can make a website and start a tutoring site for other students. I have seen this take off and the rates are good.

Sounds exciting! Hope you get accepted and come to Victoria!

best,

chrbrow

Hi Chrbrow,

Merry Christmas!!!

I was suddenly in this thought ,when exactly should i send the certificates/Transcripts (hard-copies) to UVIC ??

Should i send immediately after i submit my application online ? As i did not received any email.......... :( :( :( :(

If that is the case or general Understanding even certificates/Transcripts (hard-copies) have to be sent before the deadline to UVIC , i mean do certificates/Transcripts (hard-copies) have to reach UVIC before deadline?

is it after the Review by Graduate Admissions or after the Review by Department they inform us to send the certificates/Transcripts ?

I am completely lost after looking/reading some threads regarding sending the transcripts... :'( :'(

Please let me know your thoughts....... and the current status of my application is Under Review by Graduate Admissions

Regards.

Hello,

Hey C,

Hope you had a Merry Christmas! I have no gifts, just a bunch of questions for you! Hehe, sorry.

I got an email from the ECE Department that I've been recommended for grad studies (MEng - EE, Summer 2017), and in all likelihood I will be accepting the offer once the Grad Admissions department reviews my file. From what I've read on the internet, the engineering professors are made out to be like scrooge when it comes to studies.. Is this true? What is the industrial co-op like?

What sports are popular there? Any sign of equestrian sports?

Will I have time to travel as a grad student? Is it favourable to hitchhike in BC?

Thanks a ton!

Cheers,
SD

Hello chrbrow,
I would like to apply for masters in computer science industrial option. Firstly i would like to know whether a supervisor would be required for this ? My profile is as follows:
10th : 87.2%
12th : 86%
B.Tech : 70%
IELTS : 7.0
Work Experience : 1.5 years as developer in Ernst & Young

I had before applied to UVic for MEng in Telecommunications and Information Security and had got acceptance but was unable to make it. What do you think about my chances for MS in CS : Industrial option at UVic ?

MSc Admission Requirements
(Start of Page)
The requirements that must be satisfied in order for a student to be granted admission to the MSc program in Computer Science are:

UVic Graduate Studies Requirements: Must satisfy the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; minimum GPA is B.

Computer Science Departmental Requirements: A minimum average of B+ is required for courses taken in the last two years of the previous BSc degree.

Previous Degree: Major or honours undergraduate degree in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering/ Software Engineering (or its equivalent) OR a major or honors degree in Mathematics with an emphasis on Computer Science.

GRE: The GRE test is not required, but is highly recommended for international students.

Language: Applicants whose first language is not English should refer to the Language Proficiency requirement for the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Final decisions on admissions are made by each potential supervisor, and not by a departmental committee.

NOTE: We accept graduate degree candidates as outlined by the General Regulations of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the Graduate Calendar. Areas of research can be found through the online Graduate academic calendar here.

**Note they are looking for a B+ average on the undergrad. You are at a 70%. TB+ is 77-79%

So if thats the case then i guess i dont stand much chances. whats the percentage for B ? Simon Fraser has the big data program which says average should be B. And they also look for work experience for that course. What do you think about my chances for that ?

Maybe you're right, but SFU says B average only on entire undergrad courses (not just last 60 credits). Also, it will depend on the specific program you enter as they will have higher requirements then a B. See below:

The minimum University requirements for admission to a master’s program are as follows.

a) a bachelor's degree from Simon Fraser University or its equivalent from a recognized institution;
b) a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or a grade point average of at least 3.33/4.33 (B+) based on the last 60 credits of undergraduate courses. All graduate work is also considered. Individual graduate programs may set a higher admission grade point average;

c) submitted evidence, usually references from qualified referees, of the student’s ability to undertake advanced work in the area of interest. In addition, some programs also require completion of entrance examinations such as the GMAT and GRE, and/or the submission of other material.

In exceptional circumstances, a student may be admitted with lower formal qualifications than in (a) or (b) when there is significant professional experience relevant to the proposed area of scholarship.

Students must satisfy any further requirements set by the graduate program committee. Students whose native language is not English may be required to satisfy the University and the graduate program committee as to their capability in English.

Your experience at Ernst Young might apply to the "exceptional circumstances". Can you get a referral from this company to complete the Masters? If you had a job offer contingent on the maters degree, it would help in so many ways (immigration wise too)

Forgot to answer you initial question:

This the Percent to Letter Grade Chart you should go by for Canadian Universities:

A+ 90.00 - 100.00
A 85.00 - 89.99
A- 80.00 - 84.99
B+ 76.00 - 79.99
B 72.00 - 75.99
B- 68.00 - 71.99
C+ 64.00 - 67.99
C 60.00 - 63.99
C- 55.00 - 59.99
D 50.00 - 54.99
I 0.00 - 49.99
F 0.00 - 49.99

You still don't make the cut for a "B"

I will definitely be asking my technical lead to provide a letter of reference for my admission. You think it may actually help???

Regardless of which University you apply to, you should get a letter from your boss indicating that there is a job waiting for you after the program, and that the qualifications you receive from the program will ultimately benefit the company's success. Two things the letter will do:
1) Validate your skills and background in the field (this might help overcome your low undergrad % when applying to programs)
2) When it comes time for applying for a study permit you will have to prove to immigration authorities that you intend to leave after your studies. The job offer/referral will validate that.
