So the answer to your question is most likely no - not without further education.

I am asking because i heard about a 6 month program that enables dentist to work as a hygienst,what other options does international dentists have till they obtain their license

Even i have heard about a programm that lets us work as hygienists and once we get the license, we can practice in our profession.

Again, you need to take full time studies to be a dental hygienist if you want to work in this profession. These programs are typically two years full time study. I'm not aware of any program that can be completed in six months of full time study provided you are trained as a dentist - but it's entirely possible something exists.

That is a regulated profession, so obviously you would need to requalify; work experience abroad is not recognized in Canada. Education might be recognized only for the sake of partial exemption with the regulatory body, should they consider your education similar to Canadian standard.

If you are going to be in Ontario:

Applicants Who Graduated in Dentistry
A non-exemptible requirement for registration as a dental hygienist in Ontario is that an applicant must have graduated from a recognized accredited dental hygiene program, or one considered substantially equivalent by the Registration Committee of the CDHO. In Ontario, dental hygiene is considered a separate and distinct health profession from dentistry. Work experience is not considered a substitute for training in an educational supervised setting. Therefore, unless an applicant has successfully completed a program of study in dental hygiene in addition to her/his degree in dentistry, it is unlikely that the applicant’s course of study would be considered equivalent to a recognized accredited dental hygiene program.

The Registration Committee has, over the years, reviewed many courses of study from applicants who graduated in dentistry from Colleges/Universities in Bangladesh, China, Croatia, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Syria, United States of America, and Yugoslavia. Although the members of the Committee recognized that there was overlap between the programs, they noted that only rarely does a program of study in dentistry focus on the dental hygiene process of care. Most importantly, the Committee felt that the courses reviewed did not ensure competence in the controlled acts of scaling and root planing relative to the dental hygiene process of care. Therefore, these courses of study were not considered equivalent to a recognized accredited dental hygiene program and the applicants were not eligible to sit the CDHO's certificate of registration examinations.

For applicants who graduated in dentistry and who are interested in dental hygiene as an alternative, CDHO recommends they contact educational institutions offering accredited/approved programs in dental hygiene. You can work as a dental receptionist, dental assistant, patient co-ordinator. The best thing to do first is to get a 'HARP CERTIFICATION' which will allow you to take X-RAYS at the clinics.

Yeh, a lot. Google for "survival jobs". Honestly, your situation is not unique. Most of immigrants with medical background must go through additional exams and courses to qualify for work in Canada. I know two doctors who are still working in restaurant because of inability to pass exam.

For us it will be 2.5 to 3 years
