naturalized Canadian, getting married in Hongkong

Just wanted to ask, I'm naturalized Canadian citizen here in Canada, and I got divorced here in canada in 2015, my bf now is filipino and since divorce is not recognize in the Phil, we are planning to get married in Hongkong instead to avoid filing the expensive PETITION FOR RECOGNITION OF FOREIGN DIVORCE. Just wondering if this is possible and if ever manghingi ang Canadian Immigration ng NSO copy ng Marriage Certificate, lalabas po ba still yong previous marriage ko if ever magpakasal po kami sa HK? I'll appreciate any information you can share here.

It doesn't matter that your divorce isn't recognized in the Philippines. Canada recognizes it, so your HK marriage certificate will be valid.

Hongkong will recognize your divorced and you can get married there. Canada immigration will not ask for your NSO because you are already naturalized canadian. You need to include your divorced certificate and Hongkong marriage certificate in your application.

Thank you all for your replies. I have no concerns about getting married in Hong Kong as it will be recognized here in Canada, but what Im not certain about is whether or not we will be asked to register our marriage in Hongkong with NSO as my fiancee is a Filipino citizen.

Did you try inviting him to come as visitor here? Get married here instead.

Hi, if you don't want your marriage to be legalize here in the Philippines then you don't need to report your marriage at consulate in hk, but you can submit your marriage certificate from hk it's valid therefore canada will recognize it.
On the other hand , you can't make any legal transaction here in the phils unless you have NSo copy of your report of marriage from Hk.
I've been waiting for 2 months now and still 2 months more to get authenticated report of marriage , I badly need that to renew my passport using my married name. Then another month to have renewed passport then we can submit our application.

Why are you waiting? Submit your app with your current name and update it with CIC later when you change it.

I understand that my marriage in Hongkong will be honoured here in Canada, but does someone know if it is the immigration's requirement to register your marriage with NSO in the Philippines even though the marriage took place outside the Philippines due to the fact that the groom is a Filipino?

Even if it is a requirement, you can simply explain that the marriage cannot be registered because the Philippines doesn't recognize your divorce. CIC is well aware of the issues with divorce in the Philippines.

I guess what I want to do, but hesitant to do it due to financial restraints is that I'm thinking of applying for Recognition of Foreign Divorce in the Philippines. The cost is enormous! I'm just trying to plan now so that when the time comes, it is smooth during the sponsorship process.

No, I have not personally experienced this but have seen the situation on the forum before. You don't have to have the divorce recognized in the Philippines. CIC will follow Canadian law.

Thank you canuck_in_uk. Sometimes, it can get confusing especially if you talk to different groups e.g. immigration consultant, Immigration Office, lawyers in Canada. They all want you to spend the money just to be on the safe side. How I wish they can tell me that there is a way around it. At least, coming from them makes it official, and I can go after them if something happens.
