All,

Wondering if any of you have had a similiar experience. My husband ordered his "Driver's Abstract" from the New Jersey DMV before he landed in Canada last month. When he went to Service Ontario to exchange his driver's license for an Ontario driver's license, they told him the driver's abstract was not detailed enough and he needed to get something from the NJ DMV that showed the date his original license was issued and not just the past 5 years of his driver's history.

We called the NJ DMV and they said they don't really do that.

We are really stuck because we also imported our car when my husband landed and now I have no idea how he is going to register the car in Ontario since it's under his name. :-/

Any suggestions (like, should he just try another Service Ontario) or simliar experiences?

The driver abstract does include the date you were first licensed in NJ and also any renewals done in NJ. Hence, i am bit surprised that you were not able to find it on abstract.

The trenton office in NJ gives the abstract. Did you take it from them?

Note: I used the NJ abstract and it had all the info right from the first time i was licensed and included all my renewals and was accepted in the ontario DMV

Hey KK,

So here we are weeks later, still the same issue. Trenton sent us back a simliar document which we got in the mail today but they said that they do not issue driver's abstracts with the original date of licensing on them because they now destroy all records after 3 years.

Maybe this is a new policy? I'm not sure. But we are really not happy.

They need to include a letter. TN does the same thing, and they included a letter stating when my husband got his first DL in TN. They have it on the system (legally, they have to. Federal Rules). Ask about a letter. I'll try to find out what the letter said specifically if I can find it. I think Drive Test took the letter though.

Hey Parker,

Yeah we asked for the letter. They gave us al etter that said because they destroy all documents after 3 years, they can't confirm the original date of license. haha I'm not kidding.

any ways, I solved it for my husband. Told him to bring the same document to another Service Ontario and try his luck. Well, low and behold, the guy at Service Ontario didn't say a word, took his NJ license, and issued him a temp. Ontario license.

From my own experience, I found the Service Ontario and Drive Test people do things differently. What are they going to do? Force you to go from G1 then G2 and G again? You aren't supposed to have two active licences.

Service Ontario doesn't do anything with the DL unless you already HAVE one.

Hey Parker,
Sorry could not get back to you. Going through the post, looks like you are all set. But just wanted to let you know, that it was Trenton office that provided the details to me with originally licensed application details and it was for 5 years.

Hence i am not sure what has changed and as you mentioned, they destroy records (which i find it tough to believe ) after 3 years ;D ;D ;D

It wasn't me who posted that haha. TN is where my husband is from and Brockville is where I am from.

I am aware of that but Drive Test Centres also handle licence exchange in addition to Service Ontario.

- The 5 year extract you get from DMV is not good . Still get it as it will help in showing that you driving record, but not good in other area where you have show when you first got your license.
- I called trenton DMV headquater and they sent me a form. I filled the form and sent it to their trenton office. Within few days the sent the document which shows the date when I first time got the liecense.
- Presented this letter to ontario license office and immediately got G license.

Note: it is also good if you take expired NJ licenses with you.

I had issues with getting an ON license. I wrote Trenton and obtained the driver abstract and they only gave me a G2 license. I had been driving for 20 years, including 7 in NJ. Service Ontario said NJ is one of the few states where the info isn't automatically transferred. I still don't know why they only gave me a G2 and how to upgrade it without going through the stupid driving tests.

The abstract should have shown more than 2 years in order to get a G. We had issues too, refused the G2 and got ANOTHER letter saying hubby has been driving for 8 years. I'm not sure if you can do that or not since you accepted the G2 :(

I first got my Driver abstract from NJ but that didn't work in Drive Test here since it didn't have the first issue date. So i called DMV and ordered another document called Driver License Application History. This has my original application copy with my first issue and my first expiry date of license and on another page it has the final date of my expiry after renewals. Will this work for Ontario license exchange?
