Refugee claimant 2024 and work permit

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to hear from others in a similar situation or anyone who has insight into this process.

Here’s my timeline:

• October 2024 – I made a refugee claim at the airport.
• November 2024 – I submitted my claim through IRCC and also applied for a work permit.
• Current status – IRB says they received my claim, but it hasn’t started processing yet because I’m still in the screening stage with CBSA.
• As of now (May 2025), I have not received my work permit.

Has anyone experienced the same situation?

• How long did your CBSA screening take?
• When did you get your work permit?
• What happened next in your case?

I’d appreciate any timelines, advice, or shared experiences. Thanks in advance

Sometimes it takes time. I know someone who needed to reapply for the work permit. She contacted IRCC and received instructions. Here it is:

Application for a Verification of Status (VOS) https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...-status-replacement-immigration-document.html or Replacement of an Immigration Document

You would like a Verification of Status document (VOS) or a replacement copy of a valid temporary resident document that was issued by IRCC and that has been lost, stolen, destroyed or never received?

To obtain a VOS or replacement document:

We invite you to submit your application by mail,
we recommend reading the instruction guide first, it will assist you in completing and submitting your application.
a complete list of documents that can be obtained with this application are available in the Before you apply section of the instruction guide.
You can apply to replace many documents or VOS in the same application form but the processing fees are required for each document.

I don’t think so! Because i went to irb and asked about my status they told me they are ready to start my application but they are waiting cbsa ! But in my irccc portal background check is completed! I really Don’t understand how is going!

Did you hire a lawyer? If not, you can get legal aid to provide you with a voucher to get one. I doubt you are at that stage yet where you eligible to apply for work permit. It's difficult to say for sure without the full picture of the story.

Yes i have lawyer, and she send a request but nobody answer!

You will just have to be patient until your lawyer hears back. At this stage it is more of a waiting game.
