Hello folks, Can I change the university and course applied in my study permit, since I've deferred the intake, I thought I could apply for better universities this fall

You can if you have admission to another school. So submit LOA through webform. If processed with current school then you cannot change it. Sometimes people send a webform with new LOA and school but in the meantime, get approved for original school. Then they have to a) apply for a new study permit or b) come to Canada and study at school on permit for a semester and then change schools. If changing make sure it is an equivalent program.

Unless you are willing to attend a whole semester at the other school and then transfer. If if gets approved with your current school, you cannot change it. You will need to apply for a new study permit. That is why if your application has been in process for a few months, you need new LOA ASAP.

If your application has been approved
If your application for a study permit has been approved and you change your DLI, you must submit a new study permit application with a new letter of acceptance. You must also pay all the fees for the new application.

They usually provide the opportunity to upload new documents or update your application while it is still being processed.

If your study permit has not yet been approved, you can upload a new acceptance letter from another university into the system where you applied for your visa. It's definitely not prohibited, try it. I’m already studying and I learned the same thing as you. Of course, studying here is hard, I even sometimes pay for essay writing, I use https://ca.edubirdie.com/pay-for-essay-writing for this. But I definitely don’t want to take it all back. Prepare all the necessary documents from the new university, because I did not have many, and because of this everything was delayed.

It's simple, you must apply for a new study permit. I was in the same situation as you.

@Naturgrl , reading your advises and comments here, looks like you are the best person who can I ask with, thank you in advance...Alright, one of my friends nephews has originally issued 3 years study Permit, so he came to Canada in June 11, 2023 and was issued up to Sep 2027 Study permit, for his Bachelors program in Vancouver, however, he changed his program and institution in the middle of that year by transferring to new DLI (process in IRCC website), and this program only takes 11 months and now he is done with this program (11 months). So my question, does he have remaining Study Permit still from the original September 2027 expiry, or his Study permit will end after the 11 months program he took recently. And now he is going on vacation for 1 month in the Philippines, we are wondering if he can come back to Canada on his status, because he is saying he still have until September 2027 study permit. But other says no, his study permit validity will change into his recent Diploma program (1 year) not his original bachelors program (4 years), and i think that makes sense right. Right now, he is going on vacation and applying to a new diploma again so that he can stay in Canada and come back, but he says, he will not apply for a new study permit anymore because he still has 2 years left validity of his SP (Sep 2027). Now he is on vacation, what status he would have when he comes back then, except as a Visitor because he can apply for ETA, since everyone uses KIOSK at the airport he said he can get inside anytime anywhere without Border can question his status. We told him to apply for a new Study permit for the new college, but he said not anymore. And he said even he has to do that, he said he will not need PLA since he will apply for SP inside Canada when he comes back. Can you respond please, thank you.

Once program is completed, study permit is no longer valid after 90 days. You can no longer extend study permit status but needs a new study permit. He cannot start studying until new study permit is approved.

Hi Naturagrl, his first DLI changed was last year - this was his program he finished just this January 2025. He is thinking to change DLI again as he wanted to get another diploma in the other college, but we are wondering if he can changed again the DLI.

Needs a new study permit showing funds of $21k plus tuition and justify costs with education and career progression when returns home. Tell him to ask college about PAL. May need one if completed program and permit expiring.
