Hi there,
I am currently enrolled in a masters program in Canada. I want to do a phd after my completing my Master’s. What is the process? Is it same like PGWP? My study permit will expire in April 2024. I want to start my phd in Sep 2024. How should I proceed? If anyone could help me with it, that would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

So your study permit expired months ago? If you mean 2025, you apply to extend your study permit showing funds, scholarships, tuition paid.

I am extremely sorry for this mistake. Yes. It will expire in April 2025 and I want to start my Phd in another institution from September 2025. Should I apply for a new study permit within April 2025?

Another scenario, if i apply for my extension in Jan 2025, 3 months early. And finish my Master’s degree within May 2025. And apply for new study permit for phD, is it possible? Is it possible to apply for second application during inplying status? If I dont get verdict within April 2025.

If you could help me with that, that would be really helpful. Thank you so much.

Just apply for an extension of your current study permit with LOA for the PhD program. You aren’t applying for a new permit unless it expires. Why not get a PGWP instead?

If I go for PGWP, will my spouse get 3years work permit along with me? That's the part I am scared of.

any kind of job? Or do i need to manage TEER 0 1 2 3 category job?
Right now any job but there have been refusals with TEER4/5. Can you show the funds to take another program? Living expenses for 2 people and tuition. IRCC may ask for it. There have been two refusals on the forum for people extending permits and were refused for proof of funds.

If you are actually doing a PhD makes no sense to apply for PGWP just apply to extend your study permit and your spouse can apply to extend their SOWP. Save PGWP for when you graduate the PhD.

Thanks a lot. Another thing is that, If I apply for my study permit extension in Jan ( as I need to apply before min 3months) for my current Masters degree and I dnt get verdict within April 2025, I will be then in implying status. But I will get offer for my phd around may, if i complete my masters within may, can I apply for study permit during implying status? Would you please guide me regarding this?

Would apply earlier than 3 months.

So do you mean, applying for a 3 year PGWP now requires a TEER 0,1,2,3 job/job offer?

I believe PGWP, until this point is open and is given to anyone who's completed studying and does not take job offers into account.

Am I missing something?

How can you apply for study permit extension in January if you don't get your PhD acceptance until May or when you have completed Masters? Pretty sure IRCC won't issue a study permit extension based on anticipated acceptance.

IMO, you should wait till May to apply for study permit extension. You go on maintained status (as a student) and begin your PhD while IRCC processes your extension. If PhD doesn't work out or you change your mind, you apply for PGWP then.
