Hi!

I'm still in Philippines and trying to find a job in Canada as a caregiver and i'm about to give up because it seems it's almost impossible.

Everybody is telling me to check on INDEED or classified ads to find a job offer, but 99% of those jobs are not willing to sponsor someone from other countries. They all want someone who's already in Canada. so I don't know why people keep telling me to check on those sites to find a job, its useless. its been 6 months i'm trying, i've sent my resume to at least 100-150 jobs offers and nothing. I have 4 years of experience as a Caregiver in Hong Kong, so it's not like I don't have any experience.

I think the only option would be to get help from an agency in Philippines, but the problem is that there's a lot of scams also, so I have no idea which one is reliable.

I would need your help on that: do you need any reliable agencies who could help me to find a job in Canada?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

I would recommend you post in the Caregivers section of the forum rather than here.

You should also be aware that Canada changed the process a while ago for hiring caregivers from outside of Canada and it's more difficult for employers to do now. The program also has an annual cap, meaning only a limited number of applications are accepted each year and then the cap resets the following year. The caps have already been reached for 2023 which means no new applications will be accepted until early 2024. You can read more about the program caps here if you are interested: https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=961&top=28

Are you, by any chance, the sister-in-law mentioned in this post from 2017?

Hi!

My sister in law just finished a 10 months professional caregiver course in her country. She don't have work experience yet but she would like to come here in Canada to work. She didn't find any employer in Canada yet.

I have 2 questions:

1) Does she have any change to be accepted to work here if she don't have experience yet as a caregiver?

2) Does anyone know where she can apply for work as a caregiver here. Ex: is 'Agencies' are the best way to find a work?

Thanks in advance!
I am guessing that, after that post, you shoved off to Hong Kong and now you would like to be a caregiver here.

@scylla has given you some useful advice. From what I know (no direct knowledge) from Filipino people here, it's not easy to apply for caregiver jobs from outside Canada and then to come here to take up those jobs. It helps if you have friends/family in Canada who can do some networking for you. We considered that route for my wife once upon a time, after her first TRV denial. We decided it looked too uncertain and time-consuming. She has a degree in hotel and restaurant management from a Phils university. She worked in that field in the Phils many years ago, but got tired of being laid off every 6 months so the employer could replace her at less cost. She would then usually end up moving to work at a hotel or resort on another island. She finally gave up on that and went off to the UAE for a few years. There, she worked for a wealthy family doing whatever they wanted - maid, caregiver, office assistant, anything at all they wanted done. Working conditions were, to put it mildly, difficult. So, like you, she went to HK and did much the same for about 6 years, but in working conditions somewhat (not a lot) more agreeable.

There are some employers here who are allowed to bring in Filipino workers who, as I understand, can eventually seek permanent residence. They require no particular skillset, just willingness. I am aware of one employer not far from me who hired about 20 Filipinos last year and plans for same again next year. Very happy with the Phils crew, the boss told me. Maybe something to consider, if you are really interested in relocating.

ok thanks for your help!
There are many dual Hong Kong - Canadian national in Hong Kong and many returned to Canada after the pandemic. Also, after the pandemic, there are many Hong Kongers eligible for the stream A & B pathways and took up residence in Canada. Can you network with your former employer to seek if there are any employment opportunities for you?

Sure, it's impossible. Do you need a reliable agent? Yes. Because there are a lot of paper work, your employer couldn't do it by themselves. It's about time & effort. Who will pay for all application fees? Your employer need to know you well, and need references.

Have you tried searching from the Dept of Migrant Workers website for approved job orders?

Why would it be impossible? If you work in Hong Kong, usually the workplace have neighbors. There are chances that you know people around the neighborhood. As I said before, some people might have returned to Canada and might want to hire domestic helpers like before in Hong Kong.
