I'm Dreaming of July/2015
Hi all

I applied 1 year ago for citizenship And till last week there was NO UPDATES on my application beside the AOR which was the last update on my tracker. Now that I left Canada for a couple of months just on the day I left ( one week ago) I got my background check completed and TODAY my citizenship test invite !!!

I actually got a 1 year training position in Australia and I was planning to go back home for a couple of months until my visa is issued!

Now do you recommend I ask IRCC to take the test outside Canada? I read some stories before on the forum about people who did that and to their suprise they were contacted a couple of months after that by IRCC asking them to submit a proof of return to Canada so their application can be processed! ( meaning once they know you are outside they stop processing your application!?)

Can those who passed with a similar situation please comment? What do you advise? Do you recommend taking a flight back just to do the test , Is it worth it to do that?

Thank you

You could search this forum for experiences similar to yours. Some people take the test outside Canada, and then have to specify when they will return. Some people are interviewed. Nobody can give any guarantees what will happen with your case. Only you know how easy/hard it is for you to return, and only you know your risk tolerance.

Thank you for your reply. I'm trying to get a sense of what happen if i take test outside. Extensively read through other experiences in the forum but there are very scarce similar situations , so i'm assuming that it is usually fine to take citizenship from outside as in my experience usually only bad experiences are mentioned on the forum

i'm guessing many have taken the test outside of Canada with no further delays? for me it is not hard at all to come back for the test but the question im trying to find an answer for that if it is worth it to do that and pay for the ticket just for the sake of the 15 min exam !

Anybody else guys have any other input?

thanks

Thanks Dreamland !

Do you think you were interviewed based on the fact you took the test outside! I know that they usually ask for interview when they have suspisioous if you fulfilled residency requirements?

May I ask if their questions during the interview were mainly asking about you being outside of Canada? or what is general questions to confirm your presence in Canada?

thank you for your help

It's a personal decision. The cases of applications being put on hold appear to be few and far between. However, nothing is certain. If you decide to do the test from outside Canada, may be you can make sure to call IRCC and actively check your application is moving afterwards. If you travel all the way and take the test, that alone doesn't mean your application is going to start moving faster. Vast majority of folks on the forum take the test from within Canada and many of them who filed in 2020 and 2021 have long wait times.

Thank you for your reply, I’m still struggling to decide if it is worth to go back, you are right about people taking the test from within canada and still getting delayed but i’m afraid i may give them an excuse to stop processing my file especially that for me things were absolutely quiet for 1 year after i applied?

A number of people have taken the test outside Canada. There are no right or wrong answers to your question. It depends on what you are after.

If you take the test from Australia and your application moves slowly, you might get enough time to complete your stint in Australia and be back in Canada for your Oath or if you spend enough time in Australia, you may decide that that is where you want to stay and forget about your Canadian citizenship. Or as a few people have reported, take the Oath from outside Canada.

Coming back to Canada just to take the test, IMHO, is wasteful, since you can take the test outside and are in any case planning to be in Australia for a year.
