The Canadian economy generated over 40,000 jobs in December 2012, according to the latest Labour Survey published by Statistics Canada. While a majority of these jobs were created in the province of Ontario (33,000), Manitoba (5,200), Saskatchewan (4,000), Newfoundland and Labrador (2,700), and Prince Edward Island (1,300) also recorded significant job increases.

The only province to record a decline in job creation was Nova Scotia, where 5,000 jobs were lost. The remaining provinces were described by Statistics Canada as “little changed” although Quebec registered an increase of 3.5% over the previous year.

Overall, the year saw the creation of 312,000 more jobs than the previous year. In addition, the unemployment rate declined to 7.1%, the lowest in four years.

Most of these jobs were created in the transportation/warehousing and construction sectors.
